Macrosegregation
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-007090
The non-uniform distribution of alloying elements on a large scale within a solidified metal casting or ingot, often visible to the naked eye. This phenomenon arises during solidification as different components solidify at varying temperatures, leading to localized enrichment or depletion of elements. Macrosegregation can result in variations in mechanical properties and corrosion resistance throughout the material.
