Hot tear
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-002902
A crack that forms in a casting while the metal is still at an elevated temperature, typically during solidification or cooling, due to tensile stresses. These tears occur when the solidifying metal lacks sufficient strength to resist shrinkage stresses. Hot tears are a common defect in castings and can compromise the structural integrity of the final product.
