Hot short
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-002899
Describing a metal that becomes brittle and loses its ductility at elevated temperatures, making it susceptible to cracking during hot working processes. This condition is often caused by the presence of low-melting point impurities, such as sulfur in steel, which form liquid films at grain boundaries. Hot shortness can severely limit the workability of an alloy.
