Hump yard

A type of railway classification yard where freight cars are sorted into new trains using a small hill, or hump. An engine pushes a string of cars to the crest of the hump, where they are uncoupled and roll by gravity down into specific tracks designated for their destination. The speed of the descending cars is controlled by retarders, which are braking devices installed alongside the rails.
