A traditional workshop game of chance played by compositors using metal type spacers, called quadrats or 'mutton-quads,' as dice. Players would toss an agreed-upon number of quads, and the outcome was determined by how many landed with their nicks (grooves on the type body) facing up. The game was historically used to settle minor disputes or decide who would pay for a round of drinks.
