Jeer

A heavy-duty tackle, composed of blocks and ropes or cables, used for hoisting and lowering the lower yards of a sailing ship. The jeer provides the primary mechanical advantage needed to manage the weight of these large spars. On large square-rigged vessels, the jeers were among the most substantial pieces of running rigging, attached to the masthead and the center of the yard.
