Hamper
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-002713
Gear aboard a ship that is necessary in general but obstructs the crew at certain times, such as loose tackle, spare spars, and coiled rigging cluttering the deck. The term is most familiar in top hamper, the masts, yards, rigging, and sails aloft, whose weight and windage raise a vessel's center of gravity and reduce its stability. In heavy weather, sailing ships sent down upper yards and topgallant masts to cut top hamper.
