Keeve
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-003158
A large wooden tub used in traditional ore dressing for the gravity separation of heavy minerals from lighter waste material. A slurry of crushed ore and water is stirred vigorously inside the vessel, and then the side is struck repeatedly, causing the denser mineral particles to settle and compact at the bottom. This process, known as keeving or tossing, was historically used to concentrate cassiterite (tin ore) and galena (lead ore) before smelting.
