Lumber dried in a heated chamber, called a kiln, to lower its moisture content so that it stays dimensionally stable after installation. Kiln-dried softwood dimension lumber is graded at 19 percent moisture content or less, as in the KD19 grade stamp, while hardwood for furniture is usually taken down to about 6 to 8 percent.
