Makeup

The addition of a fluid, gas, or other substance to a system to replace material that has been consumed or lost during a process. In a boiler system, makeup water is added to the feedwater to compensate for steam losses and blowdown. This added substance must be treated to match the quality of the existing system fluid to prevent corrosion, scaling, or contamination.
