Mexican standoff

Railroad slang for a near-collision between two trains, a head-on meeting that is narrowly averted. The phrase borrows from the general English sense of a stalemate in which no party can act without exposing itself to harm. An actual accidental head-on collision of two trains is called a cornfield meet.
