Nappe
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-003847
A sheet or curtain of water that flows over the crest of a weir or spillway. The shape and characteristics of the nappe, such as whether it is free-discharging or clinging to the structure's face, are used to determine the flow rate. For a standard sharp-crested weir, the nappe must be fully aerated underneath for discharge calculations to be accurate.
