Nappe
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007471
A sheet-like mass of air that has been thrust over another, typically warmer and less dense air moving over a colder, denser air mass along a frontal boundary. This structure is analogous to a geological nappe, where a large sheet of rock is moved over another. The overrunning process in a warm front, which creates extensive stratiform cloud decks, is a classic example of a nappe structure in the atmosphere.
