Weir

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003061

  1. A barrier constructed across a river or stream to alter its flow characteristics, such as raising the water level upstream or measuring discharge. It typically consists of a low dam or wall with a specific crest shape over which water flows. Weirs are used in hydrology for flow measurement and water management.

  2. In hydrologic terms,
    (a) A low dam built across a stream to raise the upstream water level (fixed-crest weir when uncontrolled);
    (b) A structure built
    across a stream or channel for the purpose of measuring flow (measuring or gaging weir).
