Narrow gauge
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-003849
A railway track where the distance between the inner faces of the rails is less than the standard gauge of 1,435 millimeters (4 feet 8.5 inches). Narrow-gauge railways were historically built to reduce construction costs, particularly in mountainous terrain where tighter curves and smaller tunnels are necessary. While many different gauges exist, common examples include 1,067 mm (3 feet 6 inches) Cape gauge and 1,000 mm metre gauge.
