On-Board Diagnostics, a standardized system in vehicles that monitors the performance of engine components and emission control systems. It provides a means for technicians to access diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) that indicate malfunctions. The OBD-II standard, implemented in the United States since 1996, mandates a universal connector and communication protocol for all passenger vehicles.
