Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-004146
A type of passenger train service in the United Kingdom run to fulfill a legal requirement rather than to meet passenger demand. These services, often just one train a week in one direction, are operated to avoid the formal and costly legal process of closing a railway line or station. The term originates from the Railway Regulation Act 1844, which mandated at least one affordable train per day on every line.
