An acronym for Plant Breeder's Rights, a form of intellectual property that gives the breeder of a new plant variety exclusive control over its propagating material. This protection allows the breeder to collect royalties on the sale of seeds, cuttings, or whole plants, encouraging investment in the development of new crop varieties with improved traits. PBR protection is granted for a fixed period, which is 20 years for most species and 25 years for trees and vines.
