Pendulum
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-004219
A body suspended from a fixed support so that it swings back and forth under the influence of gravity. The regular, periodic motion of a simple pendulum is determined primarily by its length, not its mass or the amplitude of its swing for small angles. This predictable periodicity made the pendulum the world's most accurate timekeeping technology from its invention in the 17th century until the 1930s, when it was superseded by quartz clocks.
