Escapement
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-002078
A mechanical linkage in timepieces that converts continuous rotational motion from a power source into discrete, periodic impulses. It works by intermittently locking and releasing a toothed escape wheel, with each release allowing the gear train to advance by a fixed amount and imparting a push to an oscillator like a pendulum or balance wheel. The lever escapement, invented by Thomas Mudge around 1755 and later refined, became the standard for the vast majority of mechanical watches produced since the 19th century.
