To join the ends of a broken yarn or sliver during textile manufacturing processes like spinning or weaving. The operator twists the two ends together by hand or with a mechanical device to restore the thread's continuity, allowing production to continue without interruption. This manual skill was historically performed by workers known as piecers, whose speed and dexterity directly affected the efficiency of spinning mules or looms.
