Plug
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-004378
A piece of wood, fibre, or plastic fitted into a hole or joint in masonry or concrete to give a nail or screw something to grip, since the bare material will not hold a fastener. Traditional plugs are wooden blocks let into the wall, often set in a mortar joint so that skirtings, frames, or battens are nailed to them, while modern plastic plugs are ribbed sleeves that expand as a screw is driven in.
