Point heater

A device used in railway systems to prevent ice and snow from accumulating on and obstructing the movement of switch points. These heaters apply warmth directly to the rails and moving components of a railroad switch, allowing it to operate correctly in freezing weather conditions. Common types include electric resistance heaters attached to the rails, forced hot air blowers, and gas-fired units that burn natural gas or propane.
