Cook

Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-001342

To overheat a piece of metal during a hot-working process like forging or during heat treatment, causing irreversible damage to its internal structure. This overheating leads to incipient melting at the grain boundaries or excessive grain growth, making the metal weak and brittle. A cooked piece of steel is often characterized by a coarse, faceted fracture surface and cannot have its properties restored by subsequent heat treatment, resulting in its being scrapped.
