An abbreviation for Penetrant Testing, a nondestructive inspection method for locating surface-breaking defects such as cracks, laps, and porosity in non-porous materials. A low-viscosity liquid dye is applied to a component's surface and drawn into discontinuities by capillary action, after which a developer makes the trapped penetrant visible. This method is classified by sensitivity levels, from Level 1 (low) to Level 4 (ultra-high).
