Ringer equivalence number

A measurement representing the electrical load a telephone device imposes on the ringing circuit of a subscriber line. The ringer equivalence number (REN) allows for calculating how many devices can connect to a single telephone line without overloading the central office's ringing generator. In North America, the total REN for all devices on a single line is limited to 5.0 by regulatory standards.
