Runaway train

A train or portion of a train that is moving uncontrolled, typically due to a loss of braking power or an unintended uncoupling on a grade. This hazardous situation can result from mechanical failure, human error, or extreme weather conditions. Runaway catch points or derails are safety devices installed on steep gradients to deliberately stop such trains.
