Spalting

The discoloration of wood caused by fungi, resulting in unique patterns and lines that are highly prized in woodworking. These patterns develop as fungi colonize and decay the wood, creating zones of pigment and demarcation lines. The process is controlled to prevent structural degradation of the timber.
