Staithe
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-005604
A pier, jetty, or similar waterside structure equipped with railway tracks for transferring bulk cargo, such as coal or iron ore, from wagons to vessels. The design allows wagons to be positioned directly over a ship's hold for efficient loading, often by tipping the contents down a chute. Many historic staithes used gravity shunting, where full wagons rolled down an incline to the tipping point and empty wagons were returned on a separate, lower track.
