Steely-eyed missile man

An informal NASA compliment for a flight controller, astronaut or engineer who stays calm and finds the right fix to a difficult problem under extreme pressure. The phrase grew out of Apollo-era mission control, where controller John Aaron was widely called the original steely-eyed missile man for his rescue of Apollo 12 after a lightning strike in 1969.
