Stone

A large, flat, smooth surface, traditionally made of stone or metal, used in letterpress printing for imposing and locking up forms of type. Compositors arrange pages of type and blocks on the stone before securing them in a chase for printing. It provides a stable and level workspace for precise typographic assembly.
