Imposing stone

A flat, smooth, and heavy stone or metal surface used by compositors to arrange and lock up pages of type for letterpress printing. The stone provides a stable and level base for the precise alignment of individual type pieces and blocks. This traditional tool was superseded by metal imposing tables and later by digital imposition methods.
