Tape out

To complete the physical design of an integrated circuit and release the resulting data file to a semiconductor foundry for manufacturing. The process marks the end of the design phase and the beginning of the fabrication, or 'fab', process. The final design data is typically delivered in a standard format such as GDSII (Graphic Design System II), which describes the geometric patterns for each layer of the microchip.
