A third-generation (3G) mobile cellular system, Universal Mobile Telecommunications System, developed as part of the International Telecommunication Union's IMT-2000 standards. It provides enhanced data transfer rates and supports multimedia services beyond those offered by 2G networks. UMTS networks commonly use Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (W-CDMA) as their air interface technology.
