To destroy a faulty electronic component or integrated circuit with a hammer, in the manner of the analog chip designer Bob Widlar, who was said to smash defective parts this way. Engineers use it half jokingly for dealing with a part that refuses to work. The anecdote was told by the engineer and columnist Bob Pease.
