Chicken bit

Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-001094

A specific bit in a hardware control or status register that, when set, disables or bypasses a new or experimental feature. Engineers include this as a safeguard, allowing them to quickly revert to a known-good operational mode if the new feature proves to be faulty after manufacturing or deployment. The name comes from the idea that the designer was too 'chicken' to fully commit to the new feature without providing a way to turn it off.
