Accumulation period

The phase in an annuity contract during which the policyholder makes payments into the annuity, and the funds grow on a tax-deferred basis. During this time, the principal and earned interest or investment gains accumulate without being distributed. This period precedes the annuitization phase, when regular income payments begin.
