Alien insurer

An insurer organized under the laws of a country other than the United States, as distinct from a domestic insurer formed in the state in question and a foreign insurer formed in another US state. Some alien insurers are admitted in a state, usually after funding a US trust account, while others write nonadmitted business such as surplus lines. Lloyd's syndicates are the best-known alien insurers in the US market.
