Foreign insurer

An insurer incorporated in a different state from the one where it writes business, in contrast to a domestic insurer chartered in that state and an alien insurer chartered in another country. Under U.S. state insurance law, a foreign insurer must obtain a certificate of authority in each state where it is admitted to sell policies. Federal tax law uses the word differently, meaning an insurer organized outside the United States.
