Domestic insurer

An insurance company that is incorporated and licensed to do business in the same state where it is conducting its operations. This designation is based on the insurer's state of domicile, which determines the primary regulatory authority overseeing its activities. A company domiciled in one state is considered a foreign insurer in any other state where it operates.
