Claims-made coverage trigger

A provision in liability insurance policies that stipulates coverage is activated when a claim is first made against the insured during the policy period. This differs from an occurrence trigger, which covers incidents that happen during the policy period regardless of when the claim is reported. Many professional liability and directors and officers policies use a claims-made trigger.
