Coinsurer

An insurer that shares in the risk of a policy alongside other insurers, each covering a specified percentage of the total insured value. This arrangement is common for large or complex risks where no single insurer wishes to bear the entire exposure. The term can also refer to the insured when they fail to meet a coinsurance provision, effectively becoming a coinsurer for a portion of the loss.
