The person or business named in a bill of lading as the party to whom a shipment is to be delivered. The consignee has the right to take delivery when the goods arrive and to claim against the carrier for loss or damage, and is not necessarily the party paying the freight charges, which depends on the shipping terms. It differs from the consignor, or shipper, who hands the goods to the carrier.
