The handing of a shipment from one carrier to another so that two or more carriers move the freight to its final destination, common in less-than-truckload service where the first carrier passes the load to one serving the delivery area. Under the Carmack Amendment, the carrier that issued the bill of lading remains liable to the shipper for loss or damage anywhere along the through route.
