Double indemnity (DI)

Term · Insurance and risk management · MLC-T-INS-001217

A provision or rider in a life insurance or accidental death and dismemberment policy requiring the insurer to pay twice the face value of the policy if the insured's death is accidental. The double indemnity (DI) payment is contingent on the death meeting specific criteria, such as not being self-inflicted and occurring within a set period after the accident. Policies strictly define what constitutes an accident, often excluding deaths from war, aviation activities, or illegal acts.
