"First bite"
Term · Insurance and risk management · MLC-T-INS-001527
A legal principle in some jurisdictions regarding animal liability, particularly for dogs, where the owner is not held strictly liable for the animal's first aggressive act if there was no prior indication of viciousness. This rule requires proof that the owner knew or should have known of the animal's dangerous propensities before a subsequent attack. Many states have moved away from this rule, imposing strict liability on owners for any injury caused by their animals.
