Multiple employer welfare arrangement (MEWA)

An employee welfare benefit plan that provides benefits to the employees of two or more unrelated employers. MEWAs can offer health, life, disability, or other benefits. They are subject to regulation under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) and state insurance laws, which aim to prevent financial instability and fraud.
