Nonconforming use

Term · Insurance and risk management · MLC-T-INS-002325

A property use that was lawful when it was established but no longer complies with current zoning regulations for its district. The use is permitted to continue because it predates the enactment of the new ordinance, a concept known as being "grandfathered in." However, the owner is restricted from expanding the nonconforming use, and if the use is discontinued for a specified period, the right to resume it may be lost.
