On-call employee

A worker who is required to be available to work at short notice, either at the employer's premises or a specified location. The determination of whether an on-call employee's time is compensable depends on the degree of restriction placed on their personal activities. Federal labor laws, such as the Fair Labor Standards Act, provide guidelines for compensating on-call time.
