The portion of an insurance risk that an insurer is unwilling or unable to retain for its own account due to capacity limitations or risk appetite. This excess amount is typically ceded to reinsurers to spread the risk and protect the primary insurer's financial stability. It represents the amount of coverage exceeding the insurer's maximum retention limit for a single risk.
